Open Adventure 12 hour race

30/06/2009

120 sportsmen and women took part in a 12 hour adventure race at the weekend, starting and finishing at Llandegla Mountain bike centre. As a venue for watersports we were asked if we could provide a "River crossing" challenge. Well, if they were mad enough to want to to get wet at dawn we had to get involved. Pushing yourself to the limit(or watching others do it) is what we enjoy most.

Competitors were given a series of challenges including a downhill bike ride, rock climbing, hill running and others and could arrive at each event site in any order. In the end most were quite sensible and left the river crossing until at least 4.00 am to prevent being cold and wet for the rest of the course. They arrives at our car park on muddy mountain bikes, did a quick change and were kitted out with safety gear then plunged into the icy waters to cross the river. Afterwards it was a quick rub down, back on with the cycling gear and off again.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue services very kindly turned out as volunteers at 2.00 am to set up the site and to provide safety cover, with some guys standing up to their middle in the water for hours. Many many thanks to them for their public spirit and dedication.

Many thanks also to Tim Higginbottom of Open Adventure (See www.openadventure.com ) for arranging the event and others like it. If anyone wants more information of upcoming events or would like to take part please vist their web-site.
