Nightingale House Hospice Raft Race
13/06/2010
The raft race today was a great success. Teams from Tetrapak (Teams 1,2,3 and 4 - very imaginative), The Screamers from the Maelor Hospital, Health Hazard from Llangollen Health Centre, The Floaters, from M & S Money and The Dobs, from Dobson and Crowther, all raised a magnificent sum of over £3000 so far.
The race went well, with only a few hiccups. Raft Guides Becky, Mike, Rob and John took a raft each and two rafts raced head to head against each other. Johns very first raft set off ok then disappeared out of sight for half an hour. We were about to send out a search party when his team appeared carrying their raft. When asked where they had been the Health Hazard team shamefacedly admitted to runnning aground on a rock and getting stuck. All went well from then on until the final between Tetra Pak team 4 and Dobs. Tetra pak 4 set off with Mike at the helm, gaining a ful raft's length lead by the first drop. Dobs made a valiant effort to catch up and actually passed the Tetrapak raft on the final stretch. It is here Tetrapak showed their mettle, hauling a member of the Dobs team off their raft mid stream. Dobs sailed on through the finish line to claim the prize, but their hopes were dashed when they were reminded that the rules were "All members of the team must be on the raft at the finish line". Nothing had been said about having extra passengers or hostages, which left the Tetrapak team the winners, despite rather dodgy behaviour.
Well done to everyone, especially those ladies who were less than happy with the idea of swimming the river.
The last race was between the losers of the first heat. The teams had to race to the middle stopper and the raft guide who could flip his / her raft first would win. (We didn't tell the teams this though) Again it was a Tetrapak team who took the booby prize. A Classic flip action provided by Becky clinched it. Congrats to them for being such good sports.
